Kara Kuzhambu

Kara Kuzhambu ,literally meaning spicy curry, is a popular curry in Tamilnadu.It goes very well with rice and is very a popular item on south Indian lunch menu.


What you need for Kara Kuzhambu:
  • Onion -1 chopped lengthwise
  • Drumstick - 1- skinned & cut into medium-sized pieces
  • Ginger - 1 piece - chopped well
  • Garlic - 4 pods - chopped well
  • Curry leaves- a few leaves
  • Tomato - 2 - chopped well
  • Tamarind - a small piece soaked in water
  • Green chilli - 4 pieces slit
  • Fenugreek - 1/2 tbsp
  • Cumin - !/2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2tbsp
  • Home powder masala powder - 2 tbsp ( if not , add red chill and coriander powders)
  • Turmeric powder - a pinch
The preparation Method:
  • Heat some oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.Crack cumin/jeera and fenugreek seeds. Fry chopped ginger,garlic,curry leaves and green chilli.
  • Sauté chopped onion till they turn golden brown and add the skinned drumstick pieces.
  • Add the chopped tomato pieces and cook till they are well done.
  • Add turmeric powder and home made masala powder(made of coriander and red chilli powder) and cook till the masala is well mixed with the rest.
  • Add the water in which the tamarind was soaked and squeeze the tamarind till it becomes dry.Cook for some more time in a low flame.
  • Finally  garnish with coriander leaves and hot & spicy kara kozhumbu is ready to be served with rice.
