Kozhukattai(modak or rice dumpling) is the favourite dish of Lord Vinayaka. There are many different varieties of kozhukattai(sweet and spicy). This is a spicy version of our favourite Kozhukattai.This is also a healthy dish as very little oil is used and the dumplings are steamed.

- Rice powder-2 cup
- Mustard seed-1/2 tbsp
- Green chilli-2
- Red chilli-2
- Onion-1 chopped
- Chana dal-1 tbsp
- Curry leaves-few
- Coconut pieces-1 cup
- Asfoedita-a pinch
- Salt to taste
The preparation method:
- Heat little oil in a pan.Splutter mustard seeds and chana dal.Add coconut pieces.saute for some time.Add chopped onion,green chilli,red chilli,curry leaves ,asfoedita and salt.saute till the onions are transparent.
- Add water to this then add rice powder.Mix well.
- Keep stirring till the water evaporates.
- When the dough become little dry, switch off the gas.
- Allow the dough to cool.Make small rice balls with hand.
- Place these balls in a idli steamer and cook for 15 minutes.
- Yummy and tasty Kozhukattai is ready to be served with chutney.
