Chicken Charu Curry

Chicken Charu curry or stew is a popular Syrian-Christian dish which is relatively simple to cook. Try this along with rice or dosa/appam.


What you needed for Chicken Charu curry:
  • Chicken -1/2kg
  • Onion –  2 sliced
  • Pepper powder-1tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – a  pinch
  • Coriander powder – 2 tbsp 
  • Cumin powder – 1 tbsp 
  • Green  chilli-4 slit
  • Whole pepper – 1/2 tbsp
  • Garlic –  4 cloves
  • Ginger-1 piece
  • Fennel seeds  – 1/4 tbsp
  • Cloves-2
  • Cinnamon-1 
  • Bay leaves-1
  • Cardamom-2
  • Potato-1
  • Coconut milk-1cup
  • Curry leaves -few
  • coriander leaves - few
  • Salt to taste
The Preparation method:
  • Marinate the chicken pieces in turmeric,pepper powder and salt. Keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pressure cooker and fry the whole garam masalas(including fennel seeds and pepper corns) and curry leaves.
  • Add sliced onions and sauté till they turn translucent.
  • Add slit green chilli,chopped ginger and garlic to this and sauté for a minute.
  • Add coriander,cumin,pepper and turmeric powders. Mix well.
  • Add the watered-down coconut milk to this and add the marinated chicken pieces.
  • Add chopped potatoes and mix well. Add enough salt.
  • Put the lid on pressure cook and keep the whistle on.
  • Cook till you hear 2-3 whistles. Remove from stove and allow it to cool.
  • Open the pressure cooker lid and add thick coconut-milk to this.Mix well.
  • Cook in low flame for a few minutes.Garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Yummy Chicken Charu curry is ready to be relished with rice or dosa/appam etc.
