Vada Curry

Vada curry is one of the popular gravies to accompany Idli or parotas for breakfast in TamilNadu. We had it for dinner yesterday night and simply loved it with idli :-)

What you need for Vada curry:
  • Chana daal - 1 cup
  • Onion -2 chopped
  • Tomato -2 chopped
  • Ginger -1 piece chopped
  • Green chilli -2
  • Garlic - 4pods
  • Mint - few
  • Coriander leaves -few
  • Curry leaves -few
  • Thin coconut milk -1 1/2 cup
  • Thick coconut milk - 3/4 cup
  • Dry chilli -2
  • Cloves -4
  • Cinnamon-1 piece
  • Cardamom-4
  • Fennel seeds  -1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder -1/2 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
The preparation method:
  • Grind the chana daal coarsely.
  • Grind ginger ,garlic,cloves,fennel seeds,cinnamon,green chilli,red chilli and cardamom with little water.keep it aside.
  • To make vada - Mix the ground chana daal,coriander leaves,curry leaves , half of the ground masala paste and salt.
  • Make small balls and fry it in oil. Keep it aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add onion and salt. Saute till the onion turn golden brown.Then add tomato and turmeric powder. Saute till the tomato is well done.
  • Add the remaining ground masla paste in to it. Mix well. Add the thin coconut milk and boil for some time.
  • Then add mint, coriander leaves and crushed vada in to it. Mix well.
  • Finally add the thick coconut milk and boil for few minutes.
  • Garnish with curry leaves.
  • Tasty Vada curry is ready to be served with idli/dosa.
