Kadala (black chickpea) Curry

Kadala curry is a popular Kerala dish made from black chickpea.It is an great accompaniment for Puttu,Idiyapam,Appam,Dosa,Idli,Rice etc. Steaming puttu and hot kadala curry is an unbeatable combination preferred in every malayalee's breakfast table.

What you need to make Kadala curry:
  • Chick Peas, soaked overnight - 1 cup
  • Coconut pieces - 1/2 cup or whatever you can get out of half a coconut shell
  • Shallot ( small onion) - 4
  • Garlic - 1-2 pods
  • Tomato - 2 , finely chopped
  • Garam masala - 1/4 tbsp
  • Coriander powder - 2 tbsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1/2 tbsp ( as per your spice level)
  • Pepper powder - 1 tbsp ( again as per your spice level)
  • Salt to taste

The preparation method : 
  • Pressure cook the soaked chickpeas with salt for 4-5 whistles. Don't drain when done.We will need it later.
  • Take some oil in a frying pan and add the coriander powder , red chilli powder , pepper powder,garam masala.Fry for a minute or two to ensure the raw taste of the spices are removed.Add small onion & garlic pods and fry some more. When the onion and garlic are well done,add the nicely chopped coconut pieces.Now add the nicely chopped tomatoes.Cook till the tomatoes are well done.
  • Grind all this together to a fine paste in a blender or mixie.
  • Now add this paste to the cooked chickpea and boil for 5 minutes.
  • For seasoning , fry small onion (chopped) and curry leaves.Add this to our boiling kadala curry and we are done!
  • Enjoy the irresistible aroma and serve hot.
