Bottle gourd / Sorakkai Koottu



Koottu is a combination of vegetable and dal and is semi solid in form. Koottu is considered to be a good substitute for sambhar and curry. It is very simple , easy to make,fragrant and tasty.


What you need for Bottle Gourd Koottu:
  • Sorakkai (Bottle gourd): 1/2 chopped
  • Moong dal: 1 cup
  • Coconut: 1/2 cup
  • Curry leaves: few
  • Coriander leaves: few
  • Salt: to taste
  • Turmeric powder: a pinch
  • Kadalai parappu (Bengal gram): 2 tbsp
  • Red chillies: 2-3
  • Methi (Fenugreek seeds): 1/2 tbsp
  • Asafoetida: a pinch
The preparation Method:
  • Fry the bengal gram,red chilli,fenugreek and asafoetida  in 1 tsp of oil.
  • Grind them by adding coconut  and little water.
  • Pressure cook bottle gourd and moong dal for 2 whistles and keep it aside.
  • Add the masala paste to the cooked veggie+dal mixture.
  • Add turmeric and salt and allow the mixture to boil.
  • Remove it from the stove (after few mins of boiling) and add curry and coriander leaves.
  • Heat coconut oil and splutter mustard seeds,curry leaves and red chillies.
  • Add it to the kootu.
  • Tasty sorakkai/bottle gourd koottu is ready to be served with rice.
