Koottu Curry

Koottu curry is a popular Kerala dish served in marriage feast. This is a combination of vegetables and chick peas, and is usually a semi-dry preparation. 


What you need for Koottu Curry:
  • Yam - 1 cup cubed
  • Raw plantain - 1 
  • Carrot - 2
  • Black chana / chick peas - 1 cup, soaked in water for 1 hr
  • Coconut grated - 1 cup
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tbsp
  • Chilli powder - 2 tbsp
  • Jaggery - 2 piece
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tbsp
  • Urad daal - 1 tbsp
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Salt to taste
The preparation method:
  • Pressure cook the black chana / chick peas.
  • Boil the vegetables with salt,turmeric powder,and chilli powder.When it is done, add the pressure cooked chick peas and jageery in to it.
  • Grind the coconut with cumin.
  • Add the ground coconut mixture into the curry.When the curry starts boiling, switch off the flame.
  • Heat oil in a pan and  splutter mustard seeds.Add urad daal and grated coconut.Fry till the coconut is golden brown.Add curry leaves also.
  • Pour this mixture in to the curry.
  • Yummy Koottu curry is ready to be served with rice.
