Onion Vatha Kuzhambu

Onion Vatha kulambu is a very traditional and authentic South Indian (Tamil) recipe.this kulambu is just good enough by itself to be enjoyed with rice.  

What you need for Onion Vatha Kuzhambu:
  • Small onion / Onion - 10 or 1 chopped
  • Garlic - 4 pods chopped
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Tamarind  - size of lemon
  • Mustard - 1 tbsp
  • Chana daal - 1 tbsp
  • Urad dhal - 1 tbsp
  • Fenu greek) - 1/4 tbsp
  • Red chilly - 2
  • Coriander powder - 1 tbsp
  • Chilli powder - 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder -1/4 tbsp
  • Gingely oil  -3 tbsp preferably
  • Asafoetida powder -a pinch
  • Salt to taste
The Preparation Method:
  • Heat oil in a pan. Splutter mustard seeds, fenugreek, chana dal, urad  dal, curry leaves and red chilli.
  • When mustard seeds crackle and dal turns brown, add sliced onion and garlic and fry till it turns soft.
  • Add salt,and coriander powder,chilli powder ,turmeric powder (or you can add sambar powder) and hing
  • Add tamarind water around 2 cups of juice from the same. Add this juice to the cooked onion.
  •  allow the mixture to boil for 20 minutes or until oil starts to float on top.
  • Add jaggery or sugar if you like the gravy to be slightly sweet.
  • if you want the gravy is bit thicker you can Mix rice flour in 1 tsp water and make a thick paste.
  • Add this paste to the tamarind gravy and stir continuously until the mixture becomes little thick.
  • Serve with rice, ghee and curry.
