Green Gram/Cherupayar Curry

Green gram or Cherupayar curry is a popular kerala curry that is goes well with puttu,dosa,idiyapam or just rice.
This is also a nutritious curry due to the high protein and iron content of the green gram.


What you need to make Green gram or Cherupayar curry:
  • Green gram - 1 cup - soaked in water for 4-5 hours
  • Coconut - 10-12 small pieces - grated well
  • Ginger - a small piece - chopped well
  • Garlic - 1-2 pod
  • Shallot/small onion - 5-6 
  • Cumin powder - 1/2 tbsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1 tbsp ( according to spice level)
  • Turmeric powder - a pinch
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tbsp
  • Curry leaves - a few leaves
  • Salt to taste
The preparation method :
  • Pressure cook the green gram along with salt , turmeric ,ginger , garlic and onion
  • Heat some oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.
  • Add curry leaves, turmeric, red chilly and jeera powder. Sauté for a minute making sure you don't burn the contents.
  • Add the boiled green gram to this.Mix the grated coconut, stir well, and bring to boil.
  • That's it ! spicy green gram / cherupayar curry is ready to served hot.
