Tomato Mint Chutney

This is one of our favourite chutney's to go along with idli and dosa.This chutney is easy to make and tastes yummy especially if you want your chutney to be spicy and sour at the same time.The real hero in this chutney is the mint.


What you need to make Tomato Mint Chutney:
  • Mint leaves - a bunch - washed well
  • Tomato - 4 chopped nicely
  • Ginger - 1 small piece - minced well
  • Garlic - 4 pods - chopped into a small pieces
  • Cashew - 5-6 pieces broken
  • Tamarind - 1 small piece ( size of a small lemon)
  • Red chilli - 2
  • Green chilli - 4 ( depending on spice level)
  • Hing/Asafoetida - 1 pinch
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tbsp
  • Jeera/Cumin seeds - 1/2 tbsp
  • Curry leaves - a few leaves
The preparation method :

  • Heat some oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.Add Jeera seeds and fry for few more seconds.
  • Add red chilli,green chilli,ginger,garlic,cashew pieces,hing and curry leaves. SautĂ© for a few minutes.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes and cook till tomatoes are well done. Add salt to taste.
  • Add the mint leaves and switch off the gas ( ensure mint leaves are not burnt)
  • Allow the contents to cool for a while and then blend it all together by adding a little water.
  • VoilĂ  ! Spicy mint tomato chutney is ready to be served with idli or dosa.
