Potato Poriyal/Upperi

Potato appears in multitude of avatars in Indian cuisine. Potato poriyal is one of our favourite potato avatar which goes very well with curd or sambhar rice.


What you need for potato poriyal/upperi:
  • Potato-3 cut into small cubes
  • Onion-1 chopped fine
  • Green chilli-2 chopped  fine
  • Chana dal-2tbsp
  • Mustard seeds-1/2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds-1/2 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder- a pinch
  • Red chilli-2
  • Cilantro-few
  • Salt to taste
The preparation method:
  • Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.Crackle cumin seeds and chana dal.
  • Add chopped onion,green chilli,red chilli,turmeric powder and salt.
  • Sauté till the onions turn translucent.
  • Add the chopped potato and sprinkle some water(for the potato to cook).
  • Cook till the potatoes are well done.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Yummy and spicy potato poriyal/upperi is ready to be rice or dosa.
