Kozhukattai

Kozhukattai(modak or rice dumpling) is the favourite dish of Lord Vinayaka. There are many different varieties of kozhukattai(sweet and spicy). This is a spicy version of our favourite Kozhukattai.This is also a healthy dish as very little oil is used and the dumplings are steamed.


What you need for Kozhukattai:
  • Rice powder-2 cup
  • Mustard seed-1/2 tbsp
  • Green chilli-2
  • Red chilli-2 
  • Onion-1 chopped
  • Chana dal-1 tbsp
  • Curry leaves-few
  • Coconut pieces-1 cup
  • Asfoedita-a pinch
  • Salt to taste

 The preparation method:
  •  Heat little oil in a pan.Splutter mustard seeds and chana dal.Add coconut pieces.saute for some time.Add chopped onion,green chilli,red chilli,curry leaves ,asfoedita and salt.saute till the onions are transparent.
  • Add water to this then add rice powder.Mix well.
  • Keep stirring till the water evaporates.
  • When the dough become little dry, switch off the gas.
  • Allow the dough to cool.Make small rice balls with hand.
  • Place these balls in a idli steamer and cook for 15 minutes.
  • Yummy and tasty Kozhukattai is ready to be served with chutney.
