Avarkkai /Broad Beans Sambar

We tasted Avarakkai /Broad Beans Sambhar at our good friend Veni's house and simply loved it. Thanks Veni for the simple and tasty sambar recipe !

What you need for Avarakkai Sambar:
  • Broad Beans - 10 no
  • Onion - 2
  • Tomato -2
  • Tamarind -1 small ball
  • Toor dal - 1 cup
  • Mustard seed -1 tbsp 
  • Cumin -1/2 tbsp
  • Whole pepper -1 tbsp
  • Hing -a pinch
  • Curry leaves -few
  • Sambar powder -2 tbsp or (coriander,turmeric  and chilli powder )
  • Salt to taste
The Preparation method:
  • Pressure cook toor dal with salt and turmeric powder.
  • Heat oil in a pan splutter mustard seeds,crackle cumin seeds and pepper.
  • Add onion,curry leaves and salt.Saute for a minute.then add broad beans and tomato saute till the tomatoes are well done.
  • Add tamarind juice and boil for few minutes.Add pressure cooked  dal and mix well.
  • Add hing and sambar powder.Boil for few minutes.
  • Switch off the flame and garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Tasty sambar is ready to be served with rice.
