Spinach Koottu

Spinach (keerai in Tamil, cheera in Malayalam, palak in Hindi) is one of the healthiest vegetables which can also be made tasty. Spinach Koottu is a simple,tasty and nutritious dish. Try it for lunch today !

What you need for Spinach Koottu:
  • Spinach – 1 bunch
  • Moong dal – 1/2 cup
  • Coconut –  1/4 cup
  • Green chillies – 2
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Asafoetida – a pinch
  • Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Red chilly – 1
  • Cumin -1 tbsp
  • Onion – 3 tbsp 
  • Salt to taste
Preparation Method:
  • Pressure cook moong dal for 3 whistles by adding the turmeric powder,salt  and asafoetida.
  • Wash the spinach well, and boil with very little water and salt till they become soft.
  • Now add the pressure-cooked moong dal  to this and allow it to boil for 5 minutes.
  • Grind the coconut,cumin and green chillies to a fine paste and add it to the boiling mixture.
  • Boil it for few minutes till the raw flavour  goes.
  • For seasoning , splutter mustard seeds in another pan. Add red chilly and onion and fry till the onions become translucent and add the seasoning to the spinach.
  • Serve hot with rice.
