Sweet Pongal

We wish you all a happy Pongal and Makara Sankranti !

Sweet Pongal is a delicacy made of newly harvested rice. It is cooked with jaggery, ghee and cashew nuts and is offered to Sun god as  a Thanksgiving occasion to nature. 

What you need for Sweet Pongal:
  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Moong dal - 3/4 cup
  • Jaggery -300 gm
  • Milk - 1/2 litre
  • Cashew - few
  • Raisins - few
  • Badam - few
  • Pistachio - few
  • Saffron - 4 strands
  • Coconut pieces - 1 tbsp
  • Cardamom powder - a pinch
  • Ghee - 1 tbsp
  • Water - 2 cups
The preparation method:

  • Boil rice and moong dal in 2 cups of water. When the rice is almost cooked, add milk and cook till rice is mashed.
  • In a seperate pan,fry nuts and raisins in ghee.
  • Add this sauted nuts along with jaggery to the pongal and cook till nice pudding consistency is achieved.
  • Add chopped coconut ,cardamom powder,and saffron to the pongal.
  • If you feel the sweet pongal is thicker in consistency, add little more boiled water Or milk to it. 
  • If you feel the pongal is not sweet enough, you can add some grated jaggery or sugar at the end. That should work.
  • Add more ghee for a richer pongal.
  • Tasty Sweet Pongal is ready to be served.
